What Is Whole-Health Wellness Care?
Wellness care seeks to activate the body’s natural healing abilities—not by adding something to the system, but by removing anything that interferes with normal function. It trusts that the body inherently knows what to do when nothing is disrupting its processes.
What’s the Main Difference Between Wellness Care and Standard Medical Care?
While the focus of wellness care is to embrace and support the body’s natural healing process, standard medical care aims to treat symptoms by introducing something external, such as medication, surgery, or a medical procedure. This approach often focuses on addressing immediate concerns without delving into the root causes of a health issue.
Inside Out vs. Outside In
For example, if a patient has high blood pressure, the standard medical approach would involve prescribing a drug to lower the blood pressure. While this might reduce the symptom, it often overlooks the underlying cause, such as poor nutrition, nerve system dysfunction, or stress. Additionally, medications may bring unwanted side effects, complicating the recovery process. Addressing only the symptom leaves the root cause unaddressed, potentially leading to recurring or worsening issues.
The Wellness Approach
Wellness is about creating optimal conditions for normal body function—and then some. This approach seeks out the underlying causes of disturbances or disruptions (which might not even present symptoms yet) and implements interventions or lifestyle adjustments to optimize the body’s conditions for healing and maintenance.
By fostering an environment that supports natural healing, the wellness approach minimizes the need for invasive treatments, which should only be used when absolutely necessary. When the body functions as it should, it heals and maintains itself effectively.
Wellness goes beyond simply being asymptomatic or pain-free. It promotes vitality, vibrant health, and an enhanced quality of life. This philosophy applies equally to mental and emotional health. While some individuals may require specialized care for psychological disorders, cultivating an environment of mental and emotional wellness can alleviate all but the most serious conditions.
