Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is the process of using controlled electrical currents to stimulate the muscles, reduce pain, heal soft tissue and stimulate healthy bone growth. Other benefits include healthier circulation and stronger muscles.
There is more than one type of Electrotherapy, including Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (PENS), The Electrical Muscle Stimulator (EMS), and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy (PENF). It is important to consult with Dr. Fries to determine which is right for you.
While Electrotherapy is usually a part of physical therapy, Dr. Tiffani Fries is experienced with incorporating Electrotherapy into a patient’s treatment regimen. Electrotherapy is specific to particular conditions, and studies show that many chronic pain patients do experience relief from these treatments.
What Can You Expect from Electrotherapy?
Your treatment will be different depending on your symptoms and severity. If the TENS unit is used for your treatments, small adhesive patches will be attached to your skin in specific areas. These patches will be connected by wires to the TENS unit where Dr. Tiffani Fries will control the electrical current directed to your treatment areas. All you have to do is sit back and relax.
It is possible that you may require a different method of electrotherapy to trigger your muscles. If this is the case, Dr. Fries will explain the process before your treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Side effects can include irritation to the skin from the adhesive that is used to attach the electrode pads to your skin. This irritation is most commonly seen in the form of a rash. Overuse of any Electrotherapy unit may cause a burning sensation.
Controlled electrical impulses can improve the function of damaged nerves. When a nerve is functioning properly, they carry electric impulses from the brain to the muscles telling those muscles to contract. A damaged nerve might not always carry the electric impulses. Electrical stimulation can help nerves heal and once again send electrical impulses on their own.
A patient should not have Electrotherapy if they are mentally impaired. If they have implanted electrical devices such as a pacemaker, Electrotherapy might damage the signals to the pacemaker. Patients with malignancies should not have Electrotherapy anywhere near their malignancy. Also, patients who have healing wounds should avoid Electrotherapy to the area where the wound is.
